Thick and long hair is a source of adornment for women, and according to Tafsir Ruh al-Bayan, women’s hair is also mentioned in the words of glorification of some angels in the heavens, along with these words: “Glory be to Him Who has adorned men with beards and women with braids.”
Therefore, it is not permissible for women to cut their hair and imitate men as an excuse, rather the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) has cursed such women. Thus, it is narrated in Mishkat al-Sharif: “Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: The curse of Allah is upon men who imitate women and upon women who imitate men.”
However, if there is a legitimate excuse, for example: cutting hair for medical purposes or if the hair becomes so long that it looks ugly or is difficult to manage, then only the excess hair is permissible to be cut as much as necessary.
گھنے اور لمبے بال عورتوں کے لیے زینت کا باعث ہیں اور تفسیر روح البیان کے مطابق عورتوں کے بالوں کا ذکر آسمانوں کے بعض فرشتوں کی تسبیح کے الفاظ میں بھی آیا ہے، ان الفاظ کے ساتھ: ’’پاک ہے وہ ذات جس نے مردوں کو داڑھیوں سے اور عورتوں کو چوٹیوں سے آراستہ کیا۔
‘‘ لہٰذا عورتوں کے لیے عذر کے طور پر بال کٹوانا اور مردوں کی مشابہت کرنا جائز نہیں، بلکہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے ایسی عورتوں پر لعنت فرمائی ہے۔ چنانچہ مشکوٰۃ الشریف میں ہے: ’’حضرت ابن عباس رضی اللہ عنہما نے فرمایا: رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: اللہ کی لعنت ہے عورتوں کی مشابہت کرنے والے مردوں پر اور مردوں کی مشابہت کرنے والی عورتوں پر۔
البتہ اگر کوئی جائز عذر ہو، مثلاً: طبی مقاصد کے لیے بال کاٹنا یا بال اتنے لمبے ہو جائیں کہ وہ بدصورت نظر آئیں یا ان کا انتظام کرنا مشکل ہو تو صرف ضرورت کے مطابق بالوں کو کاٹنا جائز ہے۔
